It's almost been three years since we tried our first shampoo and conditioner bars, and we don't ever plan on going back to traditional bulky plastic bottles filled with liquids and creams.
In this blog post we will share our experience with several brands of Shampoo and Conditioner bars, from 3 different perspectives and hair types, that of Esme, Ella and our Momma Bear.
We are also offering basic information about the eco-friendly alternative to hair care and information on each of the brands that we've tried so far and will update accordingly. Scroll down if you are looking for more information about a certain brand and how it worked out for us.
The Rise of Shampoo and Conditioner Bars:
Eco-Friendly Hair Care
In recent years, shampoo and conditioner bars have surged in popularity as a sustainable alternative to traditional liquid hair care products. These solid bars offer numerous benefits, making them a favorite among eco-conscious consumers.
What Are Shampoo and Conditioner Bars?
Shampoo and conditioner bars are solid formulations designed to cleanse and condition hair without the use of plastic packaging. They typically contain natural ingredients, essential oils, and surfactants, delivering the same effectiveness as liquid products.
Benefits of Using Bars
Eco-Friendly:
- Reduced Plastic Waste: Bars usually come with minimal or no packaging, significantly cutting down on plastic waste.
- Sustainable Ingredients: Many brands focus on natural, ethically sourced ingredients, reducing environmental impact.
Travel-Friendly:
- Lightweight and compact, these bars are perfect for travel. No worries about spills or liquid restrictions at airports!
Long-Lasting:
- A single bar can last as long as two to three bottles of liquid shampoo or conditioner, making them cost-effective over time.
Customizable Options:
- Many brands offer bars tailored for specific hair types, such as dry, oily, or color-treated hair, allowing for personalized hair care.
Reduced Water Usage:
- Shampoo bars are more concentrated, meaning they use less water in production compared to liquid shampoos.
How to Use Shampoo and Conditioner Bars
- Shampoo Bars: Wet your hair and the bar, then rub the bar directly onto your scalp and hair. Lather with your fingers and rinse thoroughly.
- Conditioner Bars: After shampooing, glide the bar over the lengths of your hair, focusing on the ends. Leave it in for a minute or two before rinsing.
- Alternative: Wet the bar and rub it between your hands until it lathers, we've found this works with most bars. No need to rub bar on the head in most cases, if you choose not to.
Common Ingredients
- Natural Oils: Coconut oil, argan oil, and jojoba oil for moisture.
- Botanical Extracts: Aloe vera, chamomile, or lavender for soothing properties.
- Sulfate-Free Surfactants: Gentle cleansers that help create lather without stripping hair of its natural oils.
Tips for Choosing the Right Bar
- Hair Type: Identify your hair needs—oily, dry, or color-treated—and choose a bar formulated for that type.
- Ingredient Sensitivities: Check for any allergens or irritants if you have sensitive skin or scalp.
- Scent Preference: Many bars are infused with essential oils, so pick a fragrance that appeals to you.
Conclusion
Shampoo and conditioner bars are revolutionizing the way we think about hair care. They offer an eco-friendly, convenient, and effective alternative to traditional products. As you consider making the switch, remember that finding the right bar for your hair type can enhance your experience and benefits.

Our Viori Review
If you have the room for them, we suggest the bamboo boxes, Viori usually offers a starter kit that includes them. They have been great and are still going strong at almost the 3-year mark.
In fact, these bars you see here are actually still going strong too! That is in part due to the fact that we all rotate our shampoo and conditioners, but we have found that in general, the bars last way longer than the bulky bottles ever did. You use less product, have less build-up... it's a win-win! Esme was the first to try the bars, so we'll start with her experience first.
Esme's Evaluation - The bars pictured above are mine, and oh how I love them. From the initial unpackaging to the first use, I knew they were a game changer.
I have dark brown hair that is wavy, but not uniformly. It tends to frizz if left to air dry and grows considerably in the humidity without the right care. If you're a FRIENDS fan, think Monica in Barbados:
I could tell with the first use, they were different, my hair felt good while shampooing, and after conditioning. One complaint I see in reviews for the conditioner is that it doesn't suds up, and it's hard to tell if you are getting any in your hair, but I can assure you, you are!
I like to run the bars under water and then between my palms and use my hands to apply, but I have also tried running the bars through my hair and on my scalp, either way it works, so you can choose what you like best.
Before trying Viori, I was using only natural and/or organic brands, but I still had to switch it up with each wash, I typically wash my hair 2-3 times a week for reference. If I tried to use one brand consecutively my hair just did not seem to behave. With Viori, I was able to go over 2 months, with it being the only brand of shampoo and conditioner that I used. This in itself was a miracle for me. I was definitely hooked on the bars and knew that I did not want to go back to bottles. In fact, I only ventured to try other brands because I was concerned about too much protein for my hair type from the rice water, although Viori claims that it is safe to use daily and I believe for most people that is probably true, as it is a very gentle, yet effective cleanser.
Since using these bars, I have less breakage and shedding and my hair looks and feels healthier. I also recommend the bamboo comb that Viori offers.
For me, these are a mainstay, and I recommend them to anyone that is looking to improve their hair health and as a bonus, help the environment.
Ella's Evaluation - So my unruly golden locks have really come a long way since switching to the bars and away from the bottles! I, like many, had post covid hair issues. I had some hair issues pre covid as well, as I never, really, looked into hair health. I first damaged my hair from straightening my curls daily for years, so I stopped straightening and started using protein rich products and my hair improved. Little did I know that too much protein can be damaging as well, and I did another number on my hair 😞
Esme told me about the Viori bars a few years ago after she discovered them and I made the switch too. I like that Viori uses a survey to match you with the right shampoo and conditioner set for your hair type. It takes a little getting used to using the bars and figuring out the best way to apply it to your hair. I wet the shampoo bar and suds it up in my hands and apply it my roots and scalp. The conditioner bar I wet and just run the bar over the part of my hair that I want to condition. I was able to use the Viori rice water bars exclusively for a few weeks before I needed to introduce a different set of bars with no protein into the mix. I a definitely noticed hair growth with the rice water. I typically wash 2-3 days per week but only use the Viori bars one week a month typically since my hair is sensitive to protein.
The Viori rice water bar is definitely a game changer if you are looking to regrow hair that once was and/or add length to a once stagnant growth rate. I could not get my hair to grow past shoulder length and be healthy. It would grow but it would also split and break and I would get it trimmed and it if I wanted it to look and feel healthy it would end up needing trimmed right back to the same shoulder length point, and with my tight curls you can imagine how much shorter it gets. With the Viori bars I'd didn't take long to notice the new tiny hairs coming in everywhere, or in my curly haired case, poking out everywhere! Which may be a little frustrating initially because it makes my hair look really frizzy with all those little curls sticking out, but you have to take the good with the bad, sometimes!
Overall I am very pleased with the Viori bars and will purchase again! My hair is finally gaining and keeping the length. I have way less breakage, splitting and shedding switching to the bars. Also recommend the bamboo holders for the bars!
Momma's Evaluation - When something works out well for one of us, we all tend to give it a whirl. We initially, gifted the sample size bars to our mom for Christmas, we were a bit surprised to see how teeny tiny they were compared to samples of other brands, but nevertheless, they were very well received and did not disappoint.
Mom has brown hair, that is thin and straight. It tends to fall into place after washing, even without a blow dry and her ends do not seem to split. Unfortunately, we did not inherit that superpower. Her hair concerns are volume and shedding related. She also washes it 2-3 times weekly on average.
Her experience with Viori has been similar, in that she can use it consecutively. She has less shedding, more growth and overall better hair health since starting.
We eventually purchased the full-size kit for her, along with the bamboo boxes. She has also added to her Viori collection and has tried several of the different bars, loving them all. Like Esme, she has completely given up on traditional bottled shampoos and conditioners.

Our Superzero Review

Upon first use, I was hooked, my hair felt and looked great. I could tell it needed a break from the Viori after using them. (No offense to Viori, as it remains a staple)
I can use them consecutively like the Viori and they give my hair the moisture it needs.
For me personally, they are my favorite of the bars that I've tried so far, they give me volume without frizz and are just a great fit for my hair type.
Sadly, Superzero has changed their formula, I am the only one out of the 3 of us that has purchased and tried the sample size of the new formula, which is more expensive by the way, and unfortunately, for me, it is just not the same. Luckily, I did score a full-size bar prior to the change, so I am good for now...
I'm not sure why companies do this when they have a product that works, but don't take my word for it, the new formula might just be what you're looking for. I am still holding out hope that they see the error of their ways and decide to at least offer the original formula again along with the new one for people like me that found it be just right the way it was.
Ella's Evaluation - EVAL TO COME - CHECK BACK SHORTLY
Momma's Evaluation - The awesome thing about the Superzero trio that we purchased, is that like Viori, it was a good fit for all of us, even with the different hair types. For a time, these were mom's favorite bars as well, but sadly she did not get the full-size version in time. Luckily for her, she has since found a new fave.
With that being said, they offered her volume and less shedding as the Viori did and she loved them and would have continued to purchase if the formula were the same.
